What is a Stripe fee and how is it calculated?
A Stripe fee is the amount Stripe deducts from each successful payment before settling the remainder to your bank account. For US-based accounts accepting domestic cards, Stripe charges 2.9% of the transaction amount plus a fixed $0.30 — the industry-standard rate for online card processing as of 2025. Unlike PayPal, Stripe does not add a surcharge for American Express cards. International cards (those issued outside the US) incur an additional 1.5% fee, and transactions requiring currency conversion add a further 1.0%. These fees are transparent and itemized: Stripe does not embed hidden spreads in exchange rates.
Base rate (US domestic cards): Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge on a US account. This applies to Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express — Stripe doesn't charge extra for Amex like some processors do.
International cards: When a card is issued outside the US, Stripe adds a +1.5% international card fee. This is assessed based on the card's country of issue, not the customer's location, so a US customer using a foreign-issued card still incurs the surcharge.
Currency conversion: If Stripe converts a charge from one currency to another (e.g., a GBP charge settling to a USD account), an additional +1.0% conversion fee is added. Both surcharges can stack: an international card charged in a foreign currency could be 2.9% + 1.5% + 1.0% + $0.30 = 5.4% + $0.30.
ACH Direct Debit: 0.8% with a $5 cap — much cheaper for large invoices. Funds take 4 business days and there's a higher dispute risk, but for trusted clients paying large amounts it's the best option on Stripe.
Instant payouts: Stripe adds a 1.0% fee (minimum $0.50) on the payout amount when using instant payouts. This is charged on the net you receive, not the gross.
Frequently asked questions
What is Stripe's standard processing fee for US businesses in 2025?
Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge for US-based accounts processing domestic cards as of 2025. This applies equally to Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express — Stripe does not add a surcharge for Amex, unlike some other processors. Custom (negotiated) rates are available for businesses processing over $1M/year.
Does Stripe charge extra for international credit cards?
Yes. When a card is issued outside the US, Stripe adds a +1.5% international card fee. If the charge currency differs from your Stripe settlement currency, an additional +1.0% conversion fee applies. Both stack: an international card charged in a foreign currency totals 5.4% + $0.30. The international surcharge is based on card issuance, not the customer's location — a US customer using a UK-issued card still incurs it.
What is Stripe's instant payout fee?
Stripe charges 1.0% of the payout amount (minimum $0.50) for instant payouts to a debit card or eligible bank account. This fee is charged on the net amount after the processing fee, not on the gross charge. Standard payouts (2 business days) are free and cover the vast majority of use cases.
When should I use Stripe ACH instead of card payments?
Stripe ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8%, capped at $5.00 — making it the clear winner for large invoices. A $2,000 payment: ACH costs $5.00 (0.25% effective) vs. $58.30 for a domestic card (2.92%). The trade-off: ACH takes 4 business days, requires the client to enter bank account details, and has a higher dispute window. Best for trusted clients paying invoices above $625 where the $5 cap kicks in.
